How Much Does an Outdoor Cinema Cost? (Australia)
A straight-talking Australian price guide to outdoor cinema — what hire costs, what owning a system costs, and the hidden extras (licensing, power, delivery) to budget for.
The honest answer: it depends on hire vs own
The biggest cost question isn’t screen size — it’s whether you hire per event or own a system. Both are valid; the right one depends on how often you’ll run it.
Hiring an outdoor cinema
A managed hire (screen, projector, audio, delivery and an operator) typically runs from a few hundred dollars for a small backyard-scale setup to several thousand for a large, fully-crewed event. The bigger the screen and crowd — and the more hands-on support — the higher the cost. You pay this every event.
Buying a system
Owning changes the maths. As a guide to system pricing (indicative, AUD):
- Backyard / entry — from around $300–$700
- Inflatable packages — roughly $2,000 (120”) up to $10,000 (6m), and $15,000–$35,000 for the largest 8–12m “mattress” systems
- Fast-fold packages — around $4,000–$9,000
- Permanent LED installations — project-based, typically $150k+
After the one-off purchase, each event costs only your time, power and a film licence — so for several events a year, owning usually wins quickly. See buy vs hire for the break-even logic.
The extras people forget to budget
- Film licensing — public screenings legally need a licence (often ~$300–$800+ per title depending on audience); see our licensing guide
- Power — a generator hire if there’s no mains, plus fuel
- Audio — PA sized to the crowd, or silent-cinema headphones near homes
- Delivery / freight — for hire or for a purchased system
- Anchoring & safety — ballast weights for inflatables in wind
- Staff time — setup, operating and pack-down
