Rear projection film allows you to convert virtually any glass surface into a functioning projection screen by applying a thin, adhesive-backed film directly to the window. This makes it possible to display video content from a projector located indoors, while the image is visible from outside. The film works by diffusing the projected light evenly across the surface, delivering a clear, bright image viewable from the non-projector side of the glass.
This product is often used in applications such as retail window displays, museums, corporate foyers, and home cinema setups. For outdoor movie settings, it offers the advantage of keeping the projector safely indoors—protected from weather and theft—while audiences enjoy the film outside. The solution is also useful in space-limited environments or for installations where minimal visual impact is desired when the projection is turned off.
The film is available in several tint levels—clear, grey, and dark tint—to suit different lighting conditions and projection brightness levels. Grey and dark tint films generally provide higher contrast and better daytime performance, while clear film is less visible when not in use.
For larger installations or unusual glass dimensions, multiple strips may be joined with minimal visible seams. Ambient lighting and projector brightness will affect final image clarity, so installation in shaded or controlled light environments is recommended for best results.
Where it shines
Rear-projection film turns plain glass into a screen with the projector hidden away — the look curators, designers and visual merchandisers reach for.
The image appears to float on the glass itself while the projector sits out of sight behind it. No screen frame, no kit in the sightline — just the content, which suits gallery installations and interpretive displays where the technology should disappear.
With the projector indoors and behind the glass it stays safe from weather, dust and tampering — ideal for shopfronts and public spaces. Film shades from clear to dark tint let you tune contrast to the room’s light.
The film goes on glass with the projector behind it indoors, so it suits shopfronts projecting to an outdoor audience. Project in shaded or controlled light for the best result.
Grey and dark-tint films give higher contrast and better daytime performance; clear film is least visible when the projection is off. Tell us your room’s lighting and we’ll advise.
Yes — it’s a favourite for immersive exhibits and feature walls because the hardware stays hidden. See our guide on rear-projection film for museums and galleries for the details.
